Markup Will Alter Image Brightness

How do I disable the "Markup Will Alter Image Brightness" change? I've used Preview to add boxes, lines and text to images for 15 years and I genuinely view it as one of the most useful features on my mac. Now when I try to apply markup it makes my image drastically darker. I'd say in its current form Markup in Preview is effectively useless and a massive step back in functionality. It's not obvious to me how to disable it, or if it's even possible.

Same here, I've been using Preview for years but this change made it useless as it turns the images illegible. I never asked for or needed the feature - why complicate things and break something that works?
