When mac wakes up, my display picture is broken, falling apart

Hello!

If the computer wakes up from sleep, sometimes, 1 out of 20 times, the display on my monitor is broken, falling apart, moving pixels everywhere, I can't see anything from the login screen, just the wallpaper colors, pixelated and moving fast.

If I detach and reattach HDMI cable to the Mac, it solves the problem.

Nothing happens if I detach and reattach HDMI cable on the monitor's side.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Experienced users on these forums frown on using Sleep, why because it often causes problems similar to what you are experiencing. In order to get the same net effect please do the following.

  1. System Settings (You can find this by clicking the Apple symbol in the upper left of the display)
  2. Lock Screen (located on left side of the sidebar)
  3. Set "Display off when inactive" to the amount of time you desire. I have mine set for 3 minutes and that has worked for over 20 years!

+1 @rkaufmann, adding:

Sleep is unnecessary on later Macs and should be disabled. Shut for long absences/idle overnights i.e and for regular operation, use the settings exactly as shown below:

Also, do not manual-sleep for brief absences, use instead the Lock Screen settings to switch the display off on timer (value as per your choice):

Thanks for your fast answer!

However, I don't quite understand, what do you mean?

Why Is it good for me, if I set it to 3 minutes? Currently, it's on 20 minutes which is fine for me.

But let's say If I let the computer sleep for a hour, when I come back and wake it up by pressing a button, sometimes the screen falls apart.

So, how your suggestion solving this problem?

Thanks! But, also, the issue is not only related to mac sleep, I guess.

It's related to display off. When the display is off - even if I didn't put mac to sleep, just the display switched off after 20 min - the issue sometimes happens, that when monitor turns on, the picture is not usable. And then I need to detach and reattach HDMI at the back of mac.

Wow, that is REALLY REALLY bad. Mac OS does not require nor does it benefit in ANY way by having third party:

  • Antivirus
  • Cleaning
  • VPN
  • Security
  • Maintenance

apps installed. My strong recommendation is to locate the uninstall install instructions for:

  • Bitdefender
  • Nord VPN

and uninstall. Then download and run FindAnyFile and having it search for anything with those names and have it Trash those files then empty the Trash!! You may also consider getting rid of Chrome too.

All that Mac OS needs in order to stay secure is to keep it up up-to-date and restart the computer about 1x per week. Other than that PLEASE leave it alone.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think once you do that and get your setting set correctly your Mac will run just fine.

What I meant is you can set the amount of time that you prefer. If you prefer 20 minutes, that is fine. I was only mentioning that I have mine set for 3 minutes which is my preference. What your preference is, is totally up to you.

Of course once you do this turn the Sleep function that you have been using off so there is no conflict as hcsitas explains.
