MS Office for Mac - Just purchased

I have just bought a Mac computer and have been a Windows user all my life. I purchased MS Office for Mac and wondering how to open files as I can see them but can't open them. What is the best place to get tutorials or can anyone help me here? Sorry if this is a lame question - this is all pretty new to me.
