I have an external drive for time machine on my iMac. I just got a new Mac Mini. Can I use this external drive for time machine on my new Mac without it deleting/erasing the older time machine files from old mac?

Yes, you can.
When connecting the external drive to the new Mac and setting up Time Machine, you'll be offered to inherit the old Mac backups.
If you do not intend to keep the old Mac, inherit the backups so that all the old backups belong to the new Mac. You'll then be able to browse them just as if your new Mac had made them.
As mentioned yes you can, however all hard disks die. So if your current Time Machine External Hard Disk is about 5 years old or older it would be wise to replace it. It is not wise to gamble with your data backup, it is very wise to have newer well running hardware that still has a long life ahead of it.
That's great news, it has plenty of life left. Sure you can re-use it and hopefully for many years to come.
