Hello, I am writing from Istanbul, Türkiye. My cousin is doing her master's degree in Germany. I will buy her a Macbook pro as a gift. Can I show her student ID when shopping at a store in the USA? She sent me her student certificate as a pdf.Can you help me? Thank you
I'm pretty sure that won't work. Otherwise, everyone would be shopping with other people's student IDs.
Also, it's very risky to make a big purchase, especially a computer, in a foreign country. Customs officials at the border are liable to charge you extra taxes and duties that will far outweigh any student discount or any cheaper prices you might find in the USA. This can happen whether you have the device with you or if you ship it.
Sometimes, they will even charge you taxes and duties even if you bought the device in the country. No problem, you say, I've got the original receipt! I'll just file form B2G - CBSA Informal Adjustment Request, and get my money back! Your refund request form will give them a good laugh, but that's all that will ever come from it.
