Adding a contact to contact list

I have read others have had this problem over the years and it seems like it hasn't been fixed. I can't add a contact to my contacts. I enter the name and when I go to address it discards my input and reverts back to contact I was viewing previously. I also can't drag a contact into any of my lists.

Why can't Apple get contacts the way people want to use it. I used ACT in the 1990's and switched to a MAC-OS thinking someday Apple will get this app right. Argh!!
