I am only just getting around to upgrading from Big Sur to Monterey on my mid 2015 macbook pro. I have tried at least a dozen times to download but right at the end I get an error message saying an error occurred while installing? Any suggestions please?

You could try getting the installer from the App Store. The App Store likes to hide old versions of macOS, so you'll need to go through a Support article to get it to show you Monterey.
