Can I plug in my 2017 MacBook Pro as the recommendation for the battery is "service recommended"?

I don't believe the battery has to be healthy, but I am not certain if the battery must also be in place for the laptop to run on the AC adapter.

Maybe another user has knowledge about that to share here. 🤞🏽

The 2017 MBP is considered vintage by Apple.

• Vintage: Apple considers a product to be vintage when the company stopped selling it more than 5 and less than 7 years ago. During this 2-year window, Apple says that service and parts may be obtained, subject to parts availability.

So, Apple may or may not be able to replace the battery. If they do, it will be an Apple sourced battery and carry an Apple warranty, whatever that may be.

If Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider cannot provide an Apple branded replacement party, there are third-party batteries available, which likely aren’t as robust as the real deal. You can run the laptop on the charger if you like.

You should consider replacing the battery, though. And be aware and watch for any sign that the battery is swelling. This would include signs of widening of any seams along the case, failure of the trackpad to click or respond properly or problems with the keyboard.
