I have an LG monitor connected to my MacBook Pro functioning as an extended desktop. It all looks as expected. However neither my Bluetooth Magic Mouse nor the trackpad pointer will extend beyond the internal display. Can anyone please advise? This setup worked perfectly well on my old Intel MacBook Pro.

Check the Arrangement setting for your external monitor. The cursor will only cross the screen boundary at the edge where the MBPs monitor and the external monitor meet, as defined by the arrangement.

Just as D.I. Johnson says, check carefully in the arrangement pane that the display placement in space on your bench matches the placement of displays in arrangement pane. If the added display is on the wrong side, it will produce baffling behavior.
Check that Bluetooth System Settings to make sure not too many devices are remembered. And make sure you don't have battery issues on any Bluetooth device. If possible, get a USB-Bluetooth dongle to see if range is an issue.
