After upgrade to Sonoma, opening of PAGES docs is VERY slow

On two MacBook Air M2, 2022, after upgrade from Ventura to Sonoma opening of PAGES docs is slow, up to a minute for a simple two pager text doc. Opening of PDF happens instantly.

What could cause this?

Pages version 14.2 (7041.0.109), Sonoma 14.6.1

  • I reassigned that PAGES documents will be open with PAGES as a default in Finder, although it was already correctly assigned.
  • I reindexed Spotlight
  • I reinstalled the entire macOS Sonoma from Recovery.
  • I put a test file into a folder, rather than keeping it on the desktop.

The exact observation is, after a restart and waiting for two mins before I tried anything:

  • Double click on PAGES document
  • PAGES loads at acceptable speed
  • The document opens over a minute later.

Working in a document is normal, a new unrelated doc from PAGES template chooser opens normal.

Update: So Apple called me back and have confirmed that the engineers are aware from multiple people that this is an issue. It will be fixed in a Sonoma update, so I would suggest avoiding any workarounds or DIY solutions if you can wait. They say typically a fix for something like this would take around 10 days to implement and release an OS update for. That's not a guarantee, however. Hope this helps.

I have a very busy couple of days ahead, so will not be trying it until probably Tueday, but wanted to share this from a poster called 'FirstPost' on LogicProHelp.com as it may be the solution we have been waiting for.

Hello, this was the first match I found confirming I wasn't the only one who met with problems upgrading from 13.7..1 to 14.7.1. I'm not even a Logic Pro user, but I thought it might help to share the solution I've found out at last. If you can't or don't want to upgrade to Sequoia, you can fix the missing recent items (and several other weird issues) resetting your user keychain. I did and everything works now. I had only to re-enter Gmail accounts passwords. Of course you must have a backup...

A few references:

"Failed to retrieve app-scope key"… | Apple Developer Forums

https://forums.developer.apple.com/forums/thread/765433

As the Apple support article is a bit laconic IMHO, I followed this link to reset my keychain:

https://macpaw.com/how-to/reset-keychain-mac

The above article is sponsored but basically reliable. Just one caveat about toggling off iCloud Keychain. As Jeff Johnson (the developr of StopTheMadness) reports

By the way, toggling off "Sync this Mac" caused System Settings to hang and eventually crash the preference pane

That's what happened to me too, but following onscreen directions I could easily update my ID Apple settings (this process was not responding).

As a last step I had to restart into secure boot to have recent items back in place.

Hope it helps. I was on the verge of erasing and install from scratch...

Right, we have a solution, but we’re not at the end yet.

With PAGES loaded and the aforementioned PLIST file moved to the desktop, the loading time of our test document is 33 seconds. This is slightly faster than before, but still way too slow. The doc is one page, 193 KB. The same happens if we duplicate the document and try with the duplicate.

No new PLIST is being generated.

We also now found that the same problem occurs with NUMBERS files.

We set up a new local user and our PAGES test document loads faster than you can say “Jack Robinson”, i.e. normal.

Is there a way how we can fix the existing user, or do we have to move all settings, docs and everything else to a new user? If the latter, what’s the most efficient way of doing this, because whichever way you look at this, it’s a rather big task.

Hello,

Same issue for me. Updated from Ventura to Sonoma (14.1.7) a few days ago and Pages and Numbers are slow to load and respond and save/rename. Takes about 30-60 seconds to load in a document. I am on a MacStudio M1Pro.

I went to the Genius Bar and they couldn't find any issues and the only solution they offered, was to take to computer for further testing. But all diagnostic they were able to run at my appointment showed no issues.

I have uninstalled and installed Pages/Numbers numerous times, etc..no change. I guess the last step will be to do a clean install.

@VikingOSX Thank you for your thoughts. After the upgrade we waited three days before we concluded that there is a real problem (i.e. to give Spotlight re-indexing enough time).

Whilst we did wait two mins after restarting in yesterday's test, we also have numerous tests where the MacBook had been on for hours already. We also had a look at activity monitor and can confidently say that there is absolutely nothing that would hog CPU cycles or any massive I/O to/from the SSD. These effects, if they existed at the time of test, would also affect other opening of files (say PDF) but they don't.

The reason for resetting the default app is based on the idea that so many things in IT need to be redone, in exactly the same setting as they clearly were before, this can solve many a problem. Unfortunately not for us.

Our own experience with typical opening times for PAGES docs on a number of different Macs (all M series CPU) matches yours. The user of the M2 MacBook Air in this case had no problem on his previous Ventura.

What's next?

One last straw… press and hold the shift key while launching Pages. Then open any document and observe the document opening time. The shift key approach prevents Pages from using its last execution state, and maybe a miracle will happen by sidestepping it.

Creating a new user is simple but migrating your existing user data to the new user is H*LL owing to specific current permissions and ownership. I would avoid that at all costs as it will be prohibitively expensive in time and profanity.

Another approach, assuming you have backed up any custom Pages templates from that com.apple.iWork.Pages container location, would be quit Pages, and then move the preceding Pages container folder to the Desktop, and let Pages recreate that container hierarchy the next time Pages is launched. I usually recommend this as the very last approach paying attention to ensuring you have a backup of any custom (My Templates) templates.

No luck, we get the same slow loading time. Taking the container out is yet to come. After that I will have to develop a plan how to move from one user to a new one.

Before I do that, there is one other symptom pn birth of these MacBooks of which I initially thought it must be unrelated. I am beginning to think it could be related.

Downloaded documents (PDF) show under Safari’s downloaded documents, you can normally double-click from there to open them. I get a message “Can’t open because none of the available apps can open it.” If I go to the Downloads folder, I can open the very document without problem.

(Safari 17.6, not yet upgraded to 18.1)

So are people just waiting for the Sonoma update and/or creating new user admin accounts? Or has anyone found another solution?

I decided to wait for a fix and if it doesn't come anymore in Sonoma (according to the MrMacintosh site, Sonoma has had its final update) I have another chance later with Sequoia, but I don't want to upgrade to Sequoia as there isn't much in it I'd urgently need.

Pages and Numbers do not work in Sonoma 14.7.1. I have wasted far too much time troubleshooting this issue. Was this upgrade even tested on M1 macs before rolling this out? I have NEVER had an issue with OS upgrades in my decades of using Apple like I have had with this one - essentially rendering my essential applications unusable. Might as well be on a windoze platform for all my trouble and wasted time. Who authorized this OS without fully testing it on older platforms??? I am only one of MANY unhappy customers. FIX IT!

Great solution if you have compatible hardware and basic app requirements. Personally, I can't do that as I have huge numbers of third party Logic Pro plugins and an audio interface that are not yet Sequoia certififed by their delvelopers/manufactures. A lot of peple who had this problem were people jumping straight from the latest version of Ventura to the latest version of Sonoma to get access to Logic Pro 11.1 - the first upgrade that had Sonoma as its minimum OS requirement. So they are all in the same boat if they have plugins from Arturia, Native Intruments, Roland etc.

It’s definitely A solution, but not the only one. If you wish to stay on Sonoma for now, unsync the iCloud back-up of your keychain, reset your keychain and then re-sync from iCloud to restore your passwords etc. Worked perfectly for me and I have yet to hear of anyone who also tried it that it didn’t work for.

Since the upgrade to Sonoma 14.7.2 on M1 MBP, multiple apps are slow to open, slow to save, and often crash or hang on quit. Affected apps are Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools, Microsoft Office. Probably others, but those are the apps that I'm cursing at lately. To me it appears to be a disk access issue. As if read/writes are blocked or slowed by security in the OS. I would upgrade to Sequoia, but Pro Tools and many plugins are not compatible yet.
