Getting dictation on Mac Book to work

I have an application on my Mac Book entitled Webroot Secure Anywhere. There is an icon for it at the top of my screen. When I selected that icon, one choice was "Pause Secure Keyboard Entry." Selecting that allowed the computer to use my voice (dictation) to be active. I went to the application that I wanted to use, tapped the Control key twice and a small icon of the microphone appears allowing me to talk and see the text appear. Maybe this will help some of you if you have a similar application on your computer.
