does proton mail VPN cause problems or is it helpful for MacBook Air?

hi all – I am about to get proton mail for security because of medical information from clients. It looks like the best safe email I can have for this purpose. The plan I purchased, but have not used yet, has VPN because I heard VPN improves safety. I have heard that the VPN only applies to proton email. Any input? Thanks.
