When listening through AirPods from time to time the sound gets distorted or disappears, the only fix is to reconnect the AirPods then it works again for some time. Never had this issue previously until I upgraded Apple TV to 18.1. I thought maybe the video is the problem, but I get the same thing in the menu and with other videos.

Same here, audio works fine as long as I dont forward or rewind. I've also tried removing my airpods from my account and then adding them back but the issue still remains.

Same here since the 18.1 update. The audio disappears or becomes distorted/barely audible. For me it happens when I'm fast forwarding or rewinding a show and then hit play. That's when the audio drops. Doesn't seem to matter which app (Netflix, Peacock, etc.). If I disconnect and then reconnect Airpods the audio comes back.
I've tried with Airpods 3 and Airpods Pro 2 and the audio is dropping for both. But so far it hasn't happened with an older pair of Beats Studio Buds.
This is exactly the same thing I have been having. Anytime I try to fast forward the distortion begins and the longer I continue, the distortion gets worse. Once I stop, it eventually will catch up and then work as normal. I’m glad others are having the same issue. I thought it was something I was doing. This all started with the 18.1 update. Apple please get this fixed!!!
Check the new update, 18.2. Tried a bit and could not reproduce the bug.

No it doesn't, I'm on TVos 18.2 and the distortion is there, going to try the "stereo" fix later tonight.
Seems like forcing stereo as a workaround fixes the issue almost completely. If I forward too much, it can start lagging again but forwarding one more time fixes it.
I hope it’s fixed in the next update. For now try forcing stereo:
Settings -> Video and Audio -> Audio Format -> Change Format = On and New Format = Stereo
Same for me, this issue started recently, and I did not know why it happens until I googled it and found this post about 18.1. On the previous OS, it was working fine without any issues for sure, as I'm constantly watching Apple TV with Airpods
I watch YouTube all the time and haven’t experienced that issue. The issue in this thread was happening under different circumstances (Fast forwarding or reversing within the same video), so maybe what’s going on with you something else.
Maybe you have a different issue? What do you mean by navigating youtube videos? Thumbnails have no autoplay, just images, so navigating you hear the standard sytem sound for navigation. Or you mean navigating to specific time of a video? Had no issues since updating to 18.2

Changing audio format to stereo didn't work for me with my Airpods 3. Fast-forwarding or rewinding still screws up the audio.
Happens to me to, audio distortion when I'm navigating between videos in YouTube app. It's crazy that this happens and that Apple wouldn't even say something of what could be the issue!
Updating to TVos 18.2 solves the issue.
