I need to replace my hard drive because I’m nearly out of data space. I opened the unit to discover there is NO physical hard drive in the place designed to hold one. There are no connectors for a hard drive either! What?! Is this iMac designed with no upgradebility? Need help.

If your iMac is not laid out as indicated in these videos and has not upgradable drive - then you likely have the model wrong. It would be either iMac18,1 or iMac18,2.

Your iMac probably has a factory SSD. It is in an NVME slot on the back side of the logic board near the USB ports.You must practically gut the computer to access it.
My 2017 iMac has the factory SSD. When I do "About this Mac..." and click the "Storage tab, it shows "1TB Flash Storage":
