Why are Pages documents SO big?

I noticed this a long time ago, but I think that Pages documents are even bigger now (e.g. take more space). For example, sharing a six page document with my writing group, I noticed that their Word documents were just 5 and 18 KB. Mine is 106 KB for six pages, 1.5 line spacing! That's crazy. Their docs are even longer.

Apple - why? And what can I do about it?

Pages is not a Word clone for one thing. The contents of a Word .docx is a collection of text XML files while the contents of a Pages document are encrypted binary files. Apple's design choice means that Pages documents will always be larger than the same content created in MS Word.

You can always use MS Word or even LibreOffice Writer if document size is sufficiently bothersome… 🤨
