iMac Pro, Safari v18.0.1, OS Seqoia 15.0.1
For some reason Safari does not provide an option to watch 4K video on Youtube. Using Chrome on the exact same Mac it works fine. I seem to remember having issues with 4K and Safari before. Has anyone else noticed this?

I have Macbook pro 2015 with Intel processor, and I can't see this video in 4k, only 1080p60.

You can't play Youtube on Netflix in 4k on your macbook, if it only support 4k30Hz
After doing some research it looks like this could be a bug in Safari 18 on Intel Macs.
On an iMac Pro(intel), Safari will not play 4K Video on YouTube. On MacBookPro(M1), Safari will play 4K video on YouTube.
Both Macs use the same OS etc
Not for me. 4k stopped working I think when I updated to MacOS 15 or maybe 15.1, just update to 15.2 now.

That's interesting. It doesn't for me. 1080p is the highest resolution I can select. Perhaps YouTube are doing some sort of A-B testing.
Thanks for your response. Something must have changed, until recently Safari was able to play 4K YouTube videos. Back to Chrome I guess.
Hello, yes I have a 4k capable monitor (iMac Pro) which is 5k. Safari is using Actual size and not zoomed. Is your Mac Intel or Apple Silicon? It's only Intel Macs that seem to be having this issue.
YouTube uses a variety of different codecs for their videos at various resolutions. Many 4K videos on that site have been encoded with VP9, with may be supported in Chrome, but not with Apple’s player framework as used by Safari.
Works fine for me, have full 4K available, if the video has so, I'm assuming yes you have a 4K capable monitor, as Safari does check for that, I have a new Apple Studio 5K display so works. Also make sure that the Youtube page is NOT zoomed to anything other than 100% if so fullscreen and certain resolutions stop working.

My main machine is Apple Silicon, Studio, but my other Mac's are Intel and I have no issue on those either. I can watch 4K on those as well.. Though I like using Retina mode so I mostly choose 1440p. I don't use any other browsers and apart from an ADD blocker I have now other extensions.

It depends on the video. E.g. this one plays in 4K in Safari on Mac.
