Issue with chomd on a linux smb share

I am having issues where I cannot chmod files on an linux smb share. There is no selinux involved, and I have all of the fruit settings enabled. When I attempt to enable user_xattr it tells me that option on mount_smbfs is not available.

I am not familiar with the details of using linux for this, but is sounds like the sharing you have established, and the credentials you have supplied, do not provide ADMIN/Owner level access to settings, at least not for these specific files.
