iPhone 16 Pro Max Wi-Fi Disconnection Issues

Model: iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB

iOS Version: 18.1

Wi-Fi Provider: Xfinity

Router: Stock Xfinity Gateway

I am having an issue with my brand new iPhone 16 Pro Max. About every few hours or so, the Wi-Fi will stop working for about 5-10 minutes before suddenly working again. The Wi-Fi shows connected on the iPhone however nothing will load and/or it will time out in that period.

I cannot find any steps to consistently reproduce this issue.

Steps I have taken to attempt to solve the issue:

  • Reboot Wi-Fi Router
  • Reboot iPhone
  • Disconnect and re-connect to Wi-Fi
  • Forget Wi-Fi and re-connect

I do not experience any other device Wi-Fi issues during the same period. I did not have this issue on my previous iPhone 11 Pro Max. I also do not experience any similar issues on other devices on the network.

I have the same issue. I have to restart my phone to get it to connect to my xfinity router. And randomly I see 5g instead of the WiFi symbol and have to restart again. This just started a couple days ago.

I find that most things that filters OR hides your IP can cause Wi-Fi to drop. Though the biggest culprit for me has just been Apple's iCloud Relay (my Norton VPN with the private IP is on right now and no issues as long as iCloud Relay is off). So:

  • Don't use Apple's iCloud Relay (this is Apple's own VPN in a sense that is usually on by default). Turn off Limit IP Address Tracking in each Wi-Fi's setting OR just globally turn off Private Relay in Settings. Why is this? Well at least for me, my Netgear routers consider iCloud Relay's constant pinging a DOS attack. And it appears worse in the new iPhones for some reason. Literally most of my entire routers' logs are iCloud Relay DOS attack blocked but only for this iPhone 16 (origination IP is Apple's servers, and pretty sure it's the iCloud Relay servers too, and destination IP is my iPhone 16, and ports being pinged are the iCloud Relay ports). None of my other iDevices do this or at least in the frequency that causes them to get blocked.
  • Avoid certain VPNs (certain VPNs will work as long as Apple's iCloud Relay is off).
  • Avoid certain Proxy networks (especially if they function like Apple's iCloud Relay, and again certain things will work if iCloud Relay is off).
  • And in rare cases, if you have a Management Profile assigned to your device that masks your IP, it may cause issues too (sorry certain business phone users, and again certain things will work if iCloud Relay is off).

This at least is all that I've found in my one month of testing for the Wi-Fi's that I've been using. I can't guarantee it will work for everyone but I personally blame iCloud Relay in my experience for all the issues. Now Apple just need to work with ISPs and/or certain router manufacturers to not mark their iCloud Relay traffic as DOS attacks or just reduce the frequency of the pinging...
