Sequoia Safari works poorly on VPN

Since the release of Sequoia safari has been nothing short of unworkable. I run a VPN (for a whole bunch of reasons, so I don't need people telling me it's unnecessary) Safari flat out does not work on many sites when on a VPN. Controls and page changes do not switch. I have put some of the sites into split tunneling and they still act badly on safari.

I have finally made the decision to make duckduckgo my default browser as I do not have the time to waste on safari any more.

If there are people in this community that know how to get safari to work properly on a VPN, I am interested in hearing how to make the changes.
