Merge two Apple Accounts?

I changed my email address last year. I had my Apple account established originally using my old email. After setting up my new email address I apparently set up a new Apple account using the new email. I would like to merge the two Apple accounts and have only one, using only my new email address. I’m told I can’t do that, but that I can only delete one of the accounts and put the remaining account under my new email address . I’m concerned that deleting one account may lose whatever is backed up on the cloud under the deleted account.

You cannot merge accounts no. And yes, if you delete one account, then everything on it, including any data on the iCloud associated with it will be deleted.

You can manually move files and photos from iCloud to the other iCloud account, by accessing one account through a web browser and downloading the files and photos to a computer or device that is logged in with the other account, and save them onto an iCloud location on the device or computer.

You will not be able to transfer downloaded apps, purchased media or backups from one account to the other however.

You would also need to export any notes, contacts, email and calendar entries from one of the accounts and then import them into the other account.
