Face ID issues on my iPhone after iOS 18 update

Does anyone experiencing face ID failure after IOS 18? mine started working intermittently yesterday around 10 am after I updated to 18.1. Device was working just fine before that, sometimes it works after a few taps in the camera (saw this "solution" in a reddit post and was surprised it worked) but I know for a fact is not a hardware issue since front camera is working just fine. Am using Iphone 13 pro max btw.

Hello, HOMH_809!

You said that you are on iOS 18.1. iOS 18.2 came out two days ago, so try updating and see if that fixes it.

You said that it’s not a hardware issue because the front camera works, but it still could be. Face ID includes a ton of sensors, including a LiDAR scanner, dot projector, flood illuminator, and a lot more.

If iOS 18.2 doesn’t fix the issue, first try working through the steps of this article: If Face ID isn't working on your iPhone or iPad Pro.

If the issue persists, you should go to Messages, then tap the New Message button (looks like a box with a pencil) in the top right corner, then click the plus (+) button next to the message field, then click Memoji, then try moving around your face and seeing if the Memoji responds.

I hope this helps!

Try updating to iOS 18.2. It came out yesterday. If iOS 18.2 doesn’t address the issue, refer to my previous comment.

There’s something everyone here needs to understand: this is a user-to-user forum. Only people hired by Apple to be moderators read posts, but only when those posts are reported. Other than that Apple can’t read these posts. If you want to talk to Apple directly:

  • For hardware and serious software issues (basically to have a conversation with Apple), contact the Official Apple Support.
  • For bug reports, feature requests, compatibility issues (basically where you don’t need someone to converse with you; you just want to tell them something), submit feedback on Apple’s feedback page.

I hope this helps!

Hello again, HOMH_809!

Hey Platypus, thanks for the fast response!

No problem. It’s my pleasure to help whenever I can!

I'll have to submit a bug report but I couldn't help but notice something, althought the memoji recognize my head movement there was a text below that said "camera covered" but the thing is my camera isn't as stated before, I can use the front camera without issues. any ideas?

That’s very odd. Were you in either very harsh or very dim lighting? You may want to make sure that you are in a well-lighted environment so the camera isn’t only taking in darkness or very bright light.

If you try again and it still doesn’t work, or if you were in a well-lighted environment, clean the camera and sensor region and then try again.

If it still says “camera covered” you should definitely contact the Official Apple Support. This very likely a hardware issue, probably with the proximity sensor or another sensor that thinks it’s being covered. Even if it’s not, the official support team are probably the best ones to help since they can assist you directly.

Best wishes, and I hope it’ll all be resolved soon!
