iMac in Target mode with Silicone Mini

From that information, your M2 Mac mini will not work. How an M1 Mac mini would I don't know, unless yours really isn't a M1 unit (which was introduced in 2020).

If Target Display Mode worked between a M1 Mac mini and any iMac, you got lucky.

2012 and 2013 iMacs support Target Display Mode using Thunderbolt input. You'd need about $80+ in specialized Thunderbolt connection hardware to make a Thunderbolt data connection from a M1 or M2 Mac mini to an old 2012 or 2013 iMac. But there's another catch.

Apple added restrictions on the video source. The source has to be a Mac released in 2019 or earlier, that's running Catalina or earlier. Your M1 and M2 Mac minis are both too new to satisfy these restrictions.

Target Disk Mode is a different feature from Target Display Mode. In recent years, Apple has placed restrictions on both that have caused them to become less useful. But using an old Mac that has some form of Thunderbolt as a Thunderbolt Disk for a new Mac still appears to be supported.

Regardless of what Support said yesterday, none of new Mac's can use an old iMac as a display in TDM.

Perhaps you were actually using "Screen Sharing" over your local network instead of TDM.
