Notes app is not showing text editor when a note is selected

I've recently updated my 2021 Macbook Pro M1 Max to Sequoia 15.0.1.

After the update, my Notes App will not show the text editor when I click on a note — usually it would display it as a column to the right of the list of notes. The only way I'm able to bring up a text editor is to double click the note.

So far, I have:

  • Adjusted column widths and app display options (list vs grid, sidebar on/off, etc.)
  • Quit and restarted the app
  • Rebooted the computer
  • Deselected Notes syncing in my iCloud and rebooted

I'm attaching a screenshot so you can see what I mean — I don't have any notes, because I still have them unsynced on this machine as I try to troubleshoot.

Thanks for any help!

I was able to get back my text editor pane with these steps:

  1. Switch to View notes as gallery (four square icon)
  2. Quit Notes
  3. Open Notes again
  4. Switch back to View notes as list (list icon)

This instantly restored the text editor pane.

Thank you all for the suggestions. So — had I not screenshot my issue, I'd have felt like I overlooked something, but it honestly resolved in a way I can't even reliably explain.

What I know:

  • I can confirm it wasn't a window-size issue (I had tried that a few times thinking maybe it was just really skinny, but no).
  • I didn't get a chance to try the terminal script suggested because it resolved.

What I remember doing:

  • I clicked on gallery view (the four boxes) and back to list view. That did NOT resolve it in initially. But then I quit notes, restarted my computer again, and it was suddenly fixed.

I really wish I had a better explanation for future folks, but I'm even stumped on what resolved it.

Bring the cursor to the right side of the entire Notes window, close to the edge. See if the cursor changes to display something like this (note that is not the "simple" double-arrow icon used to resize an entire window):

If you see it, click and drag it to the left, more than a few inches. It may make the view pane reappear.
