Use Apple’s autocorrect for MS Word

Hi everyone,

I recently came across something very confusing when using the MacBook Air. I’m completely used to Apple’s autocorrect on my other devices (iPhone, iPad) where it automatically replaces misspelled words without having to hover over the word and actually click on it.

This works for every app, including Office for iOS.

However when it comes to my MacBook, this feature works perfectly for Apple apps such as Pages, but it doesn’t with Office apps, which is especially bothering with Word for Mac.

I believe that Word uses its own API to autocorrect words but I’d rather use Apple’s one which is way more convenient. Is there a way to disable Microsoft’s autocorrect and use Apple’s one instead ?

Thanks in advance !

Apple applications are written to detect when certain Apple application or operating system configuration settings are set. If you visit Word's Preferences > Spelling & Grammar panel and disable all selections, it will still be pointed at Word's Custom Dictionary. However, you can add and then select the Apple Dictionary from:

/Users/username/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary

Whether Word will use this new dictionary is unknown as I believe Word's dictionary to be more competent than Apple's.

Thanks for your reply !

Will this also change the behavior of autocorrect ? While Word’s dictionary might be richer, it doesn’t allow to fix typos “on the fly” just like it works with Apple’s Pages or on any mobile device.

I find it very time saving to be able to automatically (and accurately) correct typos without having to manually click on each word flagged as misspelled by a red underlining (or to manually add every typo possible in Word’s dictionary).
