Not sure why you think you're being held 'hostage'. No one can force you into a group chat.

Sure, you can be invited, and sure, you can get messages from the chat that you're not interested in, but if you want to leave, just leave - in Messages, tap the group name at the top of the message screen, then scroll down to the 'Leave this conversation' link. Done.

You can't leave if any of the members of the chat are using SMS/RCS.

Huh
I never noticed that before.

It's been a source of irritation for people who do a lot of group messaging for some years now. I would rather have people stick toothpicks under my fingernails than participate in ongoing group chats, so it has never really been an issue for me.

You literally can’t leave if there only a total of 3 people in the group chat so yes I do feel like I’m being held hostage I’ve googled literally everything I can think of and the only way to leave is to add someone else and then what I leave and there forced to stay like idk what this is but I’m trapped in a group chat I don’t want to be a part of like I’m just gonna have to change my Apple ID or something idk

Yes, you can leave if there are three people in the chat as long as they are using iMessage (blue).

You can also block a group message:

Delete and block MMS group spam messages

In iOS 17 and later, you can delete and block an entire group MMS message. If you receive new messages in a group MMS message that you blocked, an unread messages count appears next to Recently Deleted on your list of filters.

To delete and block an MMS group message:

    1. In an MMS group conversation, tap the group name or number of participants at the top to open the detailed view.
    2. Tap Delete and Block this Conversation.

I have exactly the same problem. Was in a group iMessage chat with three other people. It got tedious, so I removed myself, but I'm still receiving messages! All are iphone users (blue). Each time I delete messages, it reappears the next time someone sends one. I've asked them if they can remove me and they said they don't see how. Seems like a bug.
