My Acer External Monitor constantly is losing connection with my MacBookPro

My Acer External Monitor constantly is losing connection with my MacBookPro. I turn the monitor off and on but the display gets lost but at the same time the Mac thinks the display is working and the windows that should display on the external monitor do not revert to the Mac Screen (unless I disconnect the cable).
