Desktop Icons Missing 2024 - Sonoma

This has been happening intermittently. I fire up my laptop and the only desktop icon I have is Macintosh HD. In the past I just shut down, restart and the problem is fixed. Today there is nothing and I cannot seem to find the culprit. I went through all the same issues brought up in 2022, 23......but nothing helps. The only thing lately that I have taken an update on is "parallels desktop". I have the question out to that forum as well.
