Locked out of Apple ID due to trusted phone number change

Asking for a close relative . . .

The trusted phone number I was using changed (user got a new phone), and I can’t remember my Apple ID and password. Now, none of my apps work and I’m not able to hear from potential employers where I’ve recently applied for jobs. Help! This is affecting my whole life.

The Apple ID is something only you would know. There is no way to have Apple look up an Apple ID no matter what information you provide them. They do offer some tips to help you figure out what it may be:

If you forgot your Apple Account primary email address or phone number - Apple Support


Once you have that, then the password can be reset. Without another Trusted Device or Trusted Phone number, you will most likely need to use Account Recovery and will have a waiting period before it can be reset.

If you have the original purchase receipt from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller, then you may be able to remove the Activation Lock. A third party receipt will not be accepted.

This article tells you the various ways you can try to discover your forgotten Apple ID --> If you forgot your Apple Account primary email address or phone number - Apple Support Typically an Apple ID is an email address you have used. If you are currently using a mobile device that is logged into your account, go to Settings and tap your name at the top. Look in Keychain, and in a browser's security settings if you use it to automatically sign into Apple when using a browser.

If you can still sign into your account on another device you can investigate adding more ways to get a code such as multiple telephone numbers where you can receive a text or a phone call. The below is based on the section "About trusted phone numbers and trusted devices" in the article Two-factor authentication for Apple Account - Apple Support


To see, add, or change your trusted phone numbers use one of these methods:

● On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Go to Settings > your name > Sign-In & Security. Tap Two-Factor Authentication, tap Edit (above the list of trusted phone numbers), then enter your device passcode when prompted. Add or remove the number, then tap Done.

● On a Mac computer choose Apple menu  > System Settings (or System Preferences), then click your name (or Apple ID). Click Sign-In & Security, then add or remove a trusted phone number.

● Using a web browser:

1) Go to https://account.apple.com and sign in.

2) Follow Account Security options until you find one letting you change trusted numbers,

3) Click "+" to add a new number (you may be required to verify this number).

4) If you wish to remove an old number, click "-" next to the number.

If you had set up an Account Recovery Contact ( Set up an account recovery contact - Apple Support ) you can also get a code that way.


In a situation where a non-functioning device with cellular service was the only trusted number, transfer the cellular service to another device so you can receive a verification code on the other device instead.


If you can’t sign in, get access a trusted device, reset your password, or receive verification codes, you can request account recovery to regain access to your account. You should consider making sure you have multiple trusted devices and telephone numbers (ask a friend or a relative).
