Why is my iPhone asking for a password so often?

Trying to get into my iPhone has become a total chore the last month or so. Everything worked for years and years and now I am seeing: "Your password is required to sign in" 90% of the time and when it's not it doesn't always recognise me despite all my other apps like banking that do (in good light...) I updated my facial id process but it's made no difference? I don't understand because I haven't downloaded any new apps or done anything different to prompt this behaviour?

And why if my face is "good enough" for my bank isn't good enough for Apple??

24 yr Apple veteran who's so tired of the unreliability and over complexity of Apple s/ware these days.

Thanks

Dirty or obscured Face ID camera of infrared emitters is the most likely. There are also a number of situations where it will require a passcode. See When a Device Passcode or Password is required in this KB article→Face ID, Touch ID, passcodes, and passwords - Apple Support
