Apple has this odd design choice where menu bar icons that are "under" the notch can not be interacted with. How can this be tackled? I need to access those items for my work. But whenever I am without my external monitor I run into this macOS limitation, preventing me from getting my work done.
What's the idea here? How are users supposed to access the icons no longer visible?

You can choose to have less screen.
Or, you can get rid of most of the useless things you have in your status menu. A third-party status menu bar app is the third choice.
I haven't found any other way other than not putting items in the menubar, leaving a lot in Control Center and not allowing apps (and almost every app wants space in the menubar) loading during login.
Use a app like Bartender
I know this workaround exists. But this can't really be the answer to solve a problem in the OS, right?
How are menu bar icons accessed which are hidden by the notch?
