Why is iMessage sharing my photos' location for the photos I share? How to stop that?

No other app I know shares location information by default. Why does the messaging app of Apple, who are concerned about user privacy not even allow turning it off by default?

I'm aware that I can

turn off location services (duh, this is super inconvenient)
turn off the location sharing every single time I share the photo(s)

Please, am I missing something?
