Crucial x10 external boot disk not working

System:

2017 Imac

Intel 3Ghz

radeon 555 2gb

8mb ram

Ventura 13.7

I have purchased an external SSD crucial x10 plugged in to my thunderbolt. I have erased the drive and formatted the drive APFS. I have installed Ventura 13.7 onto the drive and attempted to boot from start up as instructed on youtube. I has not worked. I have tried to boot in recovery, I have tried to migrate assistant, I have tried to recover with time machine. I cannot get the drive to boot as my start up drive. Do I need to try a different drive brand, like Sandisk?

I'm attempting to speed up my machine. I'm currently getting about 50 mb per second with my current drive. I have noticed a significant decrease in my systems speeds over the years as resource demands have increased. I'd love to make this work. Also this is my first post for help. Please don't flame me if I have posted incorrectly or left out any pertinent information your require to provide assistance.

You format the Crucial X10 drive as APFS and not APFS Case-Sensitive. Keep it mounted.

Get a fresh Ventura 13.7 installer from How to download and install macOS - Apple Support and build an external Ventura bootable USB stick following these instructions: Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

Reboot your iMac while pressing and holding the option key and select the USB stick to boot into the Ventura installer where you aim it at the still mounted Crucial X10 to perform the installation on that drive. When that installation is complete, you reboot the iMac and let it boot up the internal drive so you can set your System Settings to use the X10 as your future Startup drive. Reboot again and you should be up on the X10 running Ventura.

Now is when you mount your Time Machine drive and run Migration Assistant using the TM drive as its source. If this was Ventura 13.7 on the TM drive, then just migrate to the Crucial drive. If it was an older operating system on the TM drive, I would advise against migrating applications and just reinstall any third-party apps that are compatible with Ventura after the migration is done. Eject the TM drive and apply any Ventura updates from Software Update.

Although I do not use Crucial drives as boot devices, I do use several including X8 and X9 for TM backup drives. Mine have all been formatted as APFS and perform flawlessly. I believe your issues are process-oriented and not due to a damaged Crucial drive.

You're welcome.

And, by the way, your first post here in the Apple Community was just fine. As long as you supply the model and year of the Mac and the version of the OS it is running, you have provided the best info to get started.

The screen size of a Mac is helpful as well, ie iMac (Retina 5k, 27-inch, 2017) would be the best descriptor for a particular Mac. That alone is usually all that is needed along with the OS. Sometimes the RAM amount is helpful. You done good, my friend. 🙂

I wanted to follow up. I have tried these methods without success. When I attempt to migrate my data, I choose the external ssd and I'm told that " SSD drive cannot be used for migration. SSD drive contains a Mac OS that installation that may be damaged. or something like that. I have reinstalled and reinstalled no dice. So I'm going to find a new drive. and try this all again. I'll update my results.
