Did you log in to your Apple ID on the old phone? If you did, it had an iCloud account. That won’t tell you if you ever used the features of iCloud, however. If you don’t remember setting up iCloud backup or iCloud sync you probably didn’t.
There isn't such as thing as an "iCloud account". There is an Apple Account, in which iCloud encompasses various services. You pretty much have to sign in with an Apple Account (and therefore iCloud) to do anything more than basic things such as telephone calls on a device. Ergo, it is likely you were using iCloud for some things. Some services are optional but many of them are on by default.
