Monterey Desktop Icons Hidden, Can't Unhide

I have a macbook pro running Monterey, after I started iMovie this afternoon, all my desktop icons and files disappeared.

I found them by using cmd-shift-. but cannot return them to normal.

I have not used iCloud on my desktop/files ever and as far as I can see that option is still unticked.

I have tried the chflags fix but failed.

I tried another terminal command as well but that failed too, both were internet fix suggestions.

I tried moving the desktop and finder .plist files so it created new ones but that made no difference.

I created a new folder on the desktop and that disappeared after a restart, it comes back with cmd-shift-.

It appears my desktop has gone into auto-hide mode lol.

I have run disk first aid in recovery mode and it was ok

No idea what to try next, can anyone help please???
