i have an iPad Air with the Apple Pencil 2. If i traded in the iPad Air for a new iPad mini (A17 Pro) will it be compatible with my current pencil?

Probably because it's built differently that the Apple Pencil. Again, Apple does not disclose why it's not compatible, just that it isn't.

Unknown. no reason given, but Apple specifically points out its compatible with the above pencils and not the Second Generation Apple Pencil for whatever reason.
