IMAC Photos App not importing from IPHONE

Having upgraded my IMAC to macOS Sequoia, i can no longer import photos from my iPhone 14, pro, running iOS 17.7. I don't use iCloud. Photos seem to load ok in the app, but as soon as i click import, it freezes. I have tried repairing the library twice using the tool, but that didn't work.

I created a new library and that seems to work ok, but i don't want two libraries.

As a work around, i used the "image capture" app to load iPhone photos into a iMac folder. I can then import them with no issue into the photos app. Very frustrating.

Apple recommends at least 10% of your drive be free space-- the CPU swaps data in and out of the drive and needs the room. I've found troubles with even 15% free. This was almost certainly the cause of your trouble.

Just checking: How is your new disk drive formatted? To avoid damaging the Photos Library an external drive must be formatted in either APFS format or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. Additionally, the drive can not have had Time Machine on it since it was formatted. There have been so many problems with using incompatible drives that the newest macOSs won't even allow a Library on a non-Mac formatted drive to open, since there is a chance of damaging the Photos database. If you haven't already, see this:
