Software Update via Personal Hotspot

Using an iPhone and an iPad running iOS 17, I changed my phone and during the data transfer and setup via Personal Hotspot Apple forced me to update to IOS 18 using wifi, which I simply don’t have .

While there are no connection problems whatsoever, —the iPhone using the iPad’s Personal Hotspot as well as the iPad using the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot—the new phone is stuck in Update Requested….

A small amount of data (around 200 to 300Mb) actually downloaded and then everything stopped until I connect to wifi. So it seems that Apple recognised the cellular originated gateway and blocked the download.

This is simply archaic. We don’t live in a 2Gb per month cellular plan world any more. so why not give everyone a stop point with a warning message about potential cellular data usage and give us the choice to continue or not?

I know this an old problem but I can’t believe that Apple continue with this outdated policy. I pay for a 180Gb cellular plan, use my M1 Ipad as a laptop, have no access to wifi and am 150km away from an Apple store.

When is Apple going to get rid of this outdated and restrictive practice and allow users to use the cellular data that we have paid for to do system updates?
