Pages and Numbers crash when using custom date formats

I found this a problem too. I was using Numbers.

However, I discovered that this was caused by selecting an entire column that had more than one type of format.

eg; I had Text on line 1 but Dates on all the others.

I simply selected the specific cells I wanted the special formatting to apply to and then applied the new customised format. The new format was applied successfully to the cells.
