"Emoji & Symbols" no longer coming up after Sequoia update.

Since Sequoia I can no longer get the Emoji & Symbols to appear. I used to use Shortcut Cntrl /Option /Space to bring these up. I said yes to the CHAT GPT shortcut. Could this have caused this problem? I have the Globe Shortcut enabled in Settings but this is not working either.

Mac mini, macOS 15.0

Well, I have never used Emoji directly on my Mac (M3). Because of this I have no idea when they disappeared.

However, I use Webex frequently and used emoji for reaction. Maybe this is another emoji I do not know...

But.

After upgrade to Sequoia emoji in Webex disappeared. I can't make any reaction nor insert smile into message. When I press Emoji and symbols there is no any reaction.

Ok. Maybe it is a bug in Webex. However, I tried to see Emoji in Sequoia, but failed.

I pressed Ctr+Cmd+Space, Fn+E or Edit-Emoji & Symbols from menu - no effect.

Oh, yes. There is an effect. The process is started. However, there is no any visible effect.

Of course, I restarted my Mac many times and upgraded it from 15.0 to 15.0.1 as well as upgraded Webex.

Is there any way to check if Emoji exists on my Mac?

Note, on my MacBook with the same versions of OS and Webex I can open emoji by Fn+E and from Webex.

So, something is wrong with iMac.

I have tried everything, and cannot get use of the full emoji menu. I have to type in a word for what I want to use and then hit the globe key for a few suggestions. Totally annoying and limiting. No idea how to use the pull-down menu by clicking on the smiley in the tool bar. It's just sitting there taunting me. I have it in messages, though. Gold-plated problem, I know.

2023 MacBook Pro Sequoia 15.1 that I recently restored to factory settings because of getting locked out for some odd reason. Thank the gods for iCloud.

Yes, that works. Thanks, I got it working buy Re-booting.

😫 GaryReginald, I am afraid rebooting is going to be the solution. I have hundreds!!! of Chrome tabs in several workspaces that will conflate in a singular workspace upon reboot—this is gonna be a drag. My current workaround is opening messages and clicking the emoji button (Twitter works like this, too, but that's a stupid use case.)

Until I reboot (and hope for the best), the emoji picker is completely unresponsive via the menu, keyboard, or shortcuts in all applications. I can't even "Hide Emojis & Symbols" (cuz it aint acitve!), but the menu keeps indicating it is. After several searches, I did things like activate a Japanese keyboard input, and omg.. whatever. Doing stuff like this does impact the emoji picker's state, in that it will stop saying, "Hide…" and on occasion, an emoji picker will pop up inline (like in a TextEdit doc with Japanese keyboard, lol.). Those changed states are primarily fleeting (like one click and the bug is back) and unreliable, even for a temporary workaround.

No because I have to admit, that I haven't used an Apple keyboard in like 15 years.

I'm an old point & shoot/drag & drop user that only uses a few basic shortcuts.

This is the layout I see for the USB Logitech keyboards that we use.

To be honest, I'm more inclined to use the menu dropdown than Control + Command + Space to get to Emoji's & Symbol's.

So what we have here is, you' the Language and Keyboard guru of the forum, speaking to the biggest Apple keyboard shortcut dummy of the forum.

Jerry9617, Interesting. I assumed a reboot would fix it, and I just posted about how much of a drag that will be. But you're saying even a reboot might not fix this bug. People have been reporting this for as long as Senoma. It's a weird bug that impacts so many, with no straightforward resource (of which I'm aware.) Guess I'll just have to use my shruggie shortcut from here on out.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was hoping the new update (Version 15.2 (24C101)) would fix the problem. Maybe? Partly? I can now get to the character viewer in Messages. It's back to normal. But not Mail. Click on the emoji on the menu bar, or Fn/e, or control/command/spacebar, Nada. Nothing. I've restarted. Nothing. I've turned off intelligence and Siri, then rebooted - nothing. I turned it back on and rebooted - Nothing.

I can get an emoji in Mail, and here in Safari, by typing "thumbs up", then Control/Command/SpaceBar, then select, as in: 👍🏼. The same for other select words. But it would be nice to be able to pull down the character viewer again. Other thoughts?

Hello all, I had a similar problem. I was not able to open Emoji&Symbols panel (Fn+e) and also not able to open the small panels with accented characters by holding the key (e.g. "u", "e" etc.). The probable bug is linked to Siri and Apple Intelligence which is not supported in Czech Republic and other countries.

My remedy is to switch Siri off in the System Settings and reboot. Then you can switch Siri on again.

But the problem returns back after some time. I am not sure but I guess that it is after some application updates (maybe could be one of these: DeepL, ChatGPT, Logi Options+ which work with shortcuts). Maybe somebody knows more.

FINALLY found the cause to the same issue I've been having related to this. Turns out that our WebRoot Antivirus has a "Secure Keyboard Entry" enabled by default if you Click the Webroot SecureAnywhere icon in the menu bar and then Pause Secure Keyboard Entry It WORKS again.

You can disable this in the SecureAnywhere - Advanced Settings, but you'll get a warning about being vulnerable.

Here is the LINK where I found this fix!

Good luck all!

I ran into the issue more than once, too. It seems to be related to Secure Keyboard Entry. In my case a password manager triggers this mode when it's locked, despite being in the background and hence not having focus on the password entry input. I wouldn't be surprised if other applications trigger this as well, such as a VPN client.

Once I close the application that triggers Secure Keyboard Entry, the fn key and Ctrl+Cmd+Space keyboard shortcuts work again and the emoji/symbols window shows up.

I'll also report this to Apple as it seems a bug to me that the emoji/symbols window stays hidden when Secure Keyboard Entry is active, although I can imagine that this is a side effect of how it is implemented.

To check whether Secure Keyboard Entry is triggered (although it won't tell which application caused that), the Terminal app on macOS can be used. See Terminal User Guide for details.
