This is the macOS 15 Sequoia forum you may wish to post in the iPhone forum.

However, to update an iPhone from iOS 17.7 to iOS 18 it should be as simple as going to Settings -> General -> Software Updates after ensuring you are charged up and or plugged into power.

You wouldn't be posting here if you aren't experiencing trouble. So I am going to make the assumption that it didn't work for you. The most common reason for an upgrade failure on an iPhone would be a lack of free storage space. The upgrade needs about 30% free to have enough elbow room to download and extract iOS 18 before it replaces iOS 17.7.

If you go to Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage it will show your free space and what is taking up space. The most common item to fill up storage would be a large number of Photos and attachments (photos) in Messages. Or many large games. There are some options here to free up space. Make sure you logged into iCloud and have Backup turned on and that there is a recent backup. Then you can safely offload Apps such as games or anything you do not need. It should keep the data such as saved games, etc. In Photos you can search for duplicates and merge them as well.

Older iPhones had far less storage than the new ones. So what model iPhone do you have? You can go to Settings -> General -> About to find out the model number.

I don’t believe you can update to 17.7 unless you were already running a previous version of iOS 17.
You will be offered iOS 18. That’s your only choice.

When iOS 17 came out, I was still running iOS 14 or 15. My phone offered me updates to iOS 16 and to iOS 17. I took the one for iOS 16 and have stayed on it since.

Now the phone is offering me updates to iOS 17.7 and to iOS 18. I suspect that if I wait too long to decide which one to take, the iOS 17.7 choice will go away.
