Just happened to me too, but I'm on Sonoma (14.7) and an old Intel Macbook (16" from 2019). I also had LG Ultrafine 24" connected in the clamshell mode.

This has been happening to me for the past month. I've noticed reports from people using an external monitor. I also use a 4K Dell monitor. This seems to confuse the Mac quite a bit, even before 2020.

Try to disable "Automatically adjust brightness" in the Displays settings.
An update: The laptop was connected to LG Ultrfine 24" display all the time.
I'm having that situation very often. The solution I've found so far is to disable the WiFi before I put the computer to sleep. I hope that works for you.
