iPhone keyboard lagging after iOS 18 Update

Hello guys, I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and I've been suffering for the famous keyboard lag since I've updated to iOS 17 one year ago. In my case the problem starts to occur when I enable 2 languages on my keyboard (for me, Italian and English). I hoped that with the iOS 18 update and the introduction of the bilingual keyboard this bug would finally be fixed but sadly, that was not the case. I've tried every possible troubleshooting known for this issue, yesterday I've even reset my iPhone, but again, without success. Is someone experiencing the same issue even in iOS 18? And have you managed to fix this? Thank you.

FYI for me it’s auto correct. When it’s disabled in settings, along with predictive, the lag is gone. So clearly Apple screwed up auto correct and predictive as usual and now typing is a nightmare on these phones. Time to switch back to Android.

I have noticed that keyboard looks good after rebooting the phone. Then I have seen that keyboard could lag on one app and not on another (same time, like passing from iMessage to Whatsapp), plus, longer is the message, higher is the lagging.

maybe some memory leaks occur, who knows.

BTW 18.1.1 didn’t fix the problem.

This kind of issues are honestly embarrassing for a company like Apple.

Unfortunately, i don't think it will help. I wrote a few weeks ago that for me it started with iOS 17 on my olf iPhone 11 Pro.

I got that phone new when it launched, and it still has 91% battery health. The keyboard lag was so bad that it made me buy 15 pro Max, but the problem is still here.

The only thing that helped me was to delete one of the languages on the keyboard, so now i only use my main language. Also try to delete the dictionaries that you don't use. It will be annoying to type in another language (apart from your main one), but i managed to get rid of the lag.

So don't make to many expectations regarding the battery change🙁

Yes! This is literally me. I’d been thinking it was my phone because of how old it is compared to the newest ones (11) but My friend who has the 14 told me last night that she updated to iOS 18 and her keyboard started glitching like crazy when she’d never had problems with it before so it wasn’t just my phone. Which is what made me come look into it

This is exactly what fixed it for me. I had tried resetting the keyboard dictionary, which didnt work. But turning off “predictive text”, “auto-correction”, and “show math results” completely removed the keyboard lag I have been experiencing since updating. If youre experiencing this, i suggest turning these features off if you can deal with auto correct not being on.

iOS 18.1.1 issue is still happening even in the passcode sign on screen. I have reset the keyboard dictionary and disabled multiple options on the keyboard and I can still type 2 to 3 sentences before the on screen keyboard catches up. The lag is horrible I thought by installing Google board that it would help, but the problem still exist, even in third-party applications. I uninstalled the Google board and I am still having issues with the regular iOS keyboard the other issue is it's not suggesting emojis either when I have the options enabled and the emoji keyboard enabled. I have tried reset all settings and the problem still exist.

Apparently Apple do get data about this sort of problems but either don't care or they don't know what really causes it.

If you look into analytic data on your iPhone, you can see that the phone sends regular reports back to Apple about any bug. In my case for example, only in the past 4 days the phone reported multiple problems with the keyboard. I used chat gpt to decode the file, as it is easier to read this way.

i also experienced random heating lately while scrolling on websites on Safari and doing light tasks. Those heating issues also appear in the analytics but somehow Apple manages to screw something back with every update lately.

Everyone you need to do a clean install after a big update.!I did everything and finally I remember when I went from 16 to 17 it’s was a similar issue apple isn’t doong anything because Ionce you do a clean install there is zero issue. I did it to my whole family’s devices and zero issue keyboard is so fast I can’t even type fast enough to have any lag. Your welcome everyone do a clean install and boom restore from iCloud back and zero issue I have a brand new iPhone again thank the lord and I didn’t have to download Microsoft keyboard!!! Apple you have restored my faith and do not download temu on your phone that slows the phone down as well. Merry Christmas

I just updated to iOS 18.2 and I dunno everything feels much better. In fact I turned auto correct back on and predictive text and it feels about the same as before.

the biggest surprise was how my iPad mini 5 felt after the update. That tends to be my test bench before I update my iPhone 12. I do a lot of studying and note taking on the mini with split screen. And I like having the notes app opened while I jot down some notes along the way. And it doesn’t lag so hard like it did before. Here’s hoping this is a sign things are getting better.

On my phone it’s the settings called “predictive text” and “Check Spelling”. Disabling those made the lag issues disappear…been running that way for a couple weeks, so I’m now turning predictive text back on to see if the lag comes back…if not, then I’ll turn it off and enable spell check and test that.

Turn off all the artificial intelligence predictive text and all the other garbage. I have an iPhone 14. I guess these phones are not powerful enough. The fact that AI is not smart enough to even properly capitalize My sentences is staggering so another reason to turn it off is it's absolutely terrible.

Issue not solved yet with 18.3.2.

Plus, they introduced a new issue: go to settings, see all icons on the left loading one by one!

I am not sure what is going on with Apple, but IOS is not the same solid experience as 5-6 years ago going back.

I am an iPhone user since 2010 with iPhone 4, but unless they change something with IOS 19, I will start checking other manufacturers.

Just bought an iPhone 15 Pro Max 512 and the keyboard is laggy as reported here. My previous (not dead) iPhone 8+ with an older iOS version keyboard prediction performs better than the new one... what happens Apple ? That's a basic functionality that should perform even better with a new and more powerful phone. every new iOS version is slower and introduce new bugs.

please go back to essentials, we don't need new AI garbage stuff if you're not able to make this work perfectly !
