I did the 17.01 (i think update) last night and then followed that with the 18. upgrade and then noticed this morning that I lost all text messages in the following time periods:
3/23/23-9/8/24
2/22/21-to the date above
9/25/19-to the date above
the weirdest thing.. i thought these would all be saved to the cloud

My wife updated her phone 15 to 18.0.0 and had no issues. She installed the 18.0.1 update last night and then experienced the exact same issue as above with the exact same missing date range.
Her phone is logged in to iCloud properly. This sounds like a growing issue.

**Resolved**
After checking a number of things, it finally dawned on me to ask my wife to look at her deleted messages. For some reason, all of the missing messages were in here deleted messages despite her NOT having deleted them. She selected them all, chose ones she didn't need and restored the rest by undeleting them.
Et Voila!
Just happend -- I have about a month's text messages disappeared on my brand new iPhone 16, and it happened only with one contact - my partner. Since my first iPhone my messages are set to stored on the iCloud forever. I have a few apple devices so I could see the history fine on my iMac. But after I hit "sync now" the same period of messages are gone as well. iCloud issue? I paid for extra storage on iCloud and now where do I get them back???
