How can I switch the axis in Numbers?

I have a numbers chart with dates on the y axis and costs on the x axis. How do I change them around and how do I edit the dates on the x axis?

It's important to know what kind of chart. And what your data table looks like.

If you have an X-Y Scatter chart where there is no Header Column in the table then you can switch the x and y by clicking in the chart and going here and "switching" the X Value and Y Value range references.

Click each address token, click again to select it, and then select the range in the table that you want. When the range you want is displayed (Numbers enters it automatically) then click the green checkmark.

However, if you have Date on the left and Cost on the right the chart should display with dates across the x-axis by default.

If you have a Line or other "category" chart, and you want the dates across the bottom on the x-axis then set up the table so the dates are in a Header Column (on the left, which will display as shaded). When you select the cells in the table and insert a chart it should display as you want it.

If you haven't done so already be sure to have a look at the 'Charting Basics' template at File > New in the menu for working examples. Also have a look at the User Guide at Help > Numbers Help in the menu.

Charts aren't easy, either in Excel or Numbers. You have to dive in and try different things and see what "works."

To change the color of a line click the line in the chart and (after it is selected) go to the Style tab at the right where you will see options to change the appearance, including color.

Under the Series tab you may not be seeing X Value and Y Value because your chart type is not '2D Scatter' as in my example.

If you haven't done so already I recommend having a look at the 'Charting Basics' template at File > New in your menu. You can study the working examples there, and get a feel for how they work.

Also go to the User Guide at Help > Numbers Help in the menu and search for 'chart.'

Hi SG, thanks so much for your assistance. Sorry I've taken so long to respond. I've always used Excel for Mac for my spreadsheets, but when it comes to graphs (or line charts) and creating an ongoing graph of share values on a time (or date) basis on the X axis, it's not so easy. I've therefore decided to change over to Numbers and am still a bit of a 'newbie' in getting going.

I now have three value lines running across the page, with values on the Y axis and dates on the X axis. Numbers has allocated colours to the three lines, but I'd like to change these to my preferable colours. How do I change colours?

Regarding the the example that you showed, when I click on Series I don't get X value, Y value and Name under Data as you do (I'm still on Numbers version 14.1 (7040.0.73) if that makes a difference). Do any of the references that you suggest go into this type of detail? Are these things learned more from trial and error, than from instruction books?
