Can I use a PCIe NVMe SSD in a MacBook Pro 2013?

The simplest solution is to purchase the OWC Aura SSD since it is a drop in replacement. Plus OWC is the only vendor supporting their SSD in an Apple laptop.

If you decide to utilize a standard M.2 SSD, then that M.2 SSD vendor/manufacturer will not provide any support while it is installed internally in a Mac while using an adapter. Plus the only compatible & reliable SSD adapter is from Sintech. Keep in mind not all SSDs are compatible with all computers, plus you will be adding an adapter into the mix which further complicates compatibility & reliability if you go with the M.2 SSD option instead of the OWC Aura option.

Before installing an NVMe SSD internally....the laptop must already have had macOS 10.13+ installed at some point in the past so that the system firmware has been updated with NVMe support. In addition, you will only be able to use macOS 10.13+ since older versions of macOS do not have the necessary NVMe driver to communicate with an NVMe internal SSD.

FYI, the Early 2013 model uses a different SSD than later models so if you do go with an M.2 SSD & Sintech Adapter, then make sure the Sintech Adapter is compatible with your exact model laptop such as MBPro (early 2013). The Late-2013 model uses a different style of SSD connector.

The later SSD is compatible with your MacBook Pro, you don't need to get the adapter.

Actually according to the OWC Aura product page, the max transfer rate is about 500MB/s since it is a SATA III based SSD. If it were possible to have a faster SSD, then OWC would be selling it.
