Many books in Apple Books - none show up for Finder sync

I have 300 books in Apple Books. I have always been able to sync them via Finder to my iPhone/iPad and my wife's.

No more.

The Books tab in the FInder window is completely empty. Not a single book.

Why has the book synchronisation stopped working

If you don’t see a book in your Books library, or your books and PDFs aren’t syncing across devices

If you don’t see a book in your library or if your purchases, files, Collections, or edits aren’t syncing, learn what to do.

Follow these steps first

  1. Make sure that your iPhone, iPad, and Mac have the latest software version.
  2. Sign in to all of your devices with the same Apple ID.
  3. Make sure that you have enough iCloud storage. If you don’t have enough storage, you might need to upgrade your iCloud+ plan in order to access your Books content on all of your devices.
  4. If you still have issues, select an issue below and complete the steps.

If you don’t see a book in your library

If your Books Store purchases aren’t syncing across devices

If your imported Books, PDFs, or other files aren’t syncing across devices

If your edits, annotations, or highlights aren’t syncing across devices

If your Collections aren’t syncing across devices

If you don’t see a book in your library

On your iPhone or iPad

  1. Turn on iCloud Drive: Go to Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, then tap iCloud Drive and turn on Sync this [device].
  2. Make sure that iCloud Drive is turned on for Books. Go to Settings > Books, then turn on iCloud Drive.

On your Mac

  1. Turn on iCloud Drive: Choose the Apple menu > System Settings, then click your name in the sidebar. Click iCloud on the right, then click iCloud Drive. Turn on Sync this Mac.
  2. Make sure iCloud Drive is turned on for Books: Choose the Apple menu > System Settings, then click your name in the sidebar. Click iCloud on the right, then click iCloud Drive. Click Show More Apps, then scroll and make sure Books is turned on.

If you previously deleted a book, you might need to redownload it on the device you don’t see it on. Learn how to redownload books you previously deleted.

If you previously hid a book on one of your devices, you might need to unhide it in order to see it again. Learn how to unhide a book in the Books app.

All that is very well and good, thank you. But it all tells me how to sync via iCloud and that is not what I am asking for.

What I'm after is the good old sync via Finder and USB. It has always worked - and it works fine for music, movies, photos,... Everything except for Books. The tab for books in the finder window is empty. Not one of the books that are present in Apple Books show up.

Why? Has Finder synchronisation of books been discontinued? 🤷‍♂️
