Pages autocorrect, then backspace deletes the word

The new version of pages will autocorrect a word, then for instance if I wanted to add a period after that word (since accepting the autocorrection, you have to press the spacebar), the entire word gets highlighted then deleted if you press anything and replace it with whatever you just pressed. Is there some way to turn this off?
