MacBook Air M3 screen stays very dark after being asleep

When I open up my (brand new, just opened it and installed almost everything in the past few days) MacBook Air M3, the screen is so dark I can hardly see anything. I put it to sleep with a nice, bright screen. What happened? This is horrible.

Macbook Air M3 - Low Brightness after wakeup! Ever since upgrading to Sonoma 14.6, every time I open the laptop or wake it up after sleep mode, the laptop opens in a 'dormant' stage. The display is extremely low brightness and when I try to increase it, the buttons on the keyboard don't respond. When I try to increase the brightness on the control center, the display is off (see below). This is a 3 month old computer, the newest model, this shouldn't be happening!

Have the same issue...a restart resolves the issue but eventually dark screen returns.
