Incessant restart Issues with IOS 17.6.1 update on iPad Air

My iPad Air 5th gen (model MM9L3LL/A) updated automatically to IOS 17.6.1 two days ago, and ever since, my formerly perfectly functioning, 2 year old iPad now restarts every 2-3 minutes. The battery is at 80%, but when the iPad restarts it initially says the battery is at 2%, then after a couple seconds after startup jumps back up to 80%, then after a couple minutes restarts and repeats. The iPad also restarts suddenly and frequently when plugged in and charging, even when idle and not using an app.

Just to be clear - my iPad in less than 2 years old, and was working perfectly before the update - so, this is not an issue with the battery, apps, or the iPad, and I an not interested in hearing any responses about suggestions about extending battery life, checking apps, or replacing the battery. I already tried resetting the iPad, and it did not help. This is clearly related to the iOS 17.6.1 update.

What is Apple doing to solve this issue, because it seems like there are many other people having this issue, as as usual, Apple is not providing much for useful response?? Thanks in advance.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:

So, none of your suggestions worked - even after the factory reset, it still shuts down every 2-3 minutes, starts back up with the battery at 1%, then the battery jumps back up to whatever % it was at before the shutdown. I ran a battery check app and it reported the battery is reportedly in perfect shape. It would be nice if Apple would allow folks to revert to the previous IOS to test and see if this is a glitch or issue with the IOS update, as this really seems to be a battery management/ communication issue from your software. I have an identical IPAD the same age that I shut off the updates before it went to 17.6 (still running 17.5) and it is having no issues... But now I am seemingly stuck with whatever mistake Apple's developers might have made in the IOS update. These days, that seems to be the norm with the apple ecosystem - shoddy products/ software and Apple exerting 100% control on any and all aspects of their software and ecosystem to prevent useful troubleshooting. Very frustrating!

So nothing worked...

What did you discover when you contacted Apple Support as directed - or when you visited the Genius Bar?
