apple podcast downloads hundreds of old episodes

Apple Podcasts on my iPhone XS Max running latest iOS randomly downloads hundreds of old episodes several days a week.

Bug? Podcast app marking new downloads as Played I’ve noticed since installing iOS 18 that some frequent podcasts weren’t appearing in my “Up Next” or “Latest Episodes” lists. Switching off the default option to “Hide Played Episodes” revealed that they were in my list but had been marked as ”Played” even though I hadn’t listened to them. It can’t be the app automatically playing another podcast after the last one finished (and me not noticing) as earlier today one downloaded while I was listening to another podcast and the newly-downloaded one was marked as “Played”! Shame the app doesn’t feature a ”Play History” feature which may help explain what’s going on…

Unwanted podcasts showing up in Listen Now This started a couple of weeks ago. In the Listen Now section of the podcast app, under the Up Next header, I'm getting episodes for podcasts I'm not subscribed to nor have ever been subscribed to. I may have listened to one or two episodes from the podcasts, but I never subscribed, and I never relistened to the episodes. Usually, episodes I download are removed after I've listened to them. But now I'm bombarded with episodes for every single podcast I've ever listened to. Which is really annoying. How can I get the podcast app to stop doing this?
